Position Overview
The YMCA’s Camp Glenburn is located on 30 acres of land on the beautiful Belleisle Bay. Camp Glenburn has a summer enrollment of 850 campers and serves groups through the shoulder season with leadership and recreation programs. The Camp Director will oversee the daily operations of the site and programs to ensure the health and safety of participants and staff. Customer service, relationship building, programming and administration will be a major focus of this position. The Camp Director will support outdoor education and leadership program development for both Camp Glenburn and the Glenn Carpenter Centre in the off season working directly with the Health, Membership and Recreation team.
The potential candidate will be at Camp Glenburn (April – October) and at Glenn Carpenter Centre (November – March)
Key Responsibilities
Leadership
- Responsible for direct supervision and oversight Camp Glenburn’s summer camp program, off season rentals, outdoor education programs and staff.
- Responsible for the key operating areas of human resources, financial management, program development, program delivery and evaluation.
- Ensure a safe, fun camp program that reflects the values and vision of Camp Glenburn and YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick
- Ensure all programming is meeting both SAM Standards and Child Protection policies.
- The Camp Director will be a positive role model for fellow staff, C.I.T.s and campers in every aspect of camp life, being conscious of health, dress, speech, etiquette and relation with others.
- To ensure that every individual who attends Camp Glenburn is treated with respect, understanding and compassion.
- Represents the YMCA in a professional manner.
- Actively contribute to the staff team of the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick
- To assist in outdoor education and leadership programs during the off season as requested by the General Manager, HMR
Administration
- Manage summer registration to fill all cabins and support administration, ensuring it is organized, assessed and prepared for opening and closing days.
- Successfully manage camp budget to meet all targets
- To manage all camper and parent issues in a clear, consistent and timely manner.
- Ensure all deadlines are met and camp/program communication is completed in a timely manner.
- Review camp survey each year and create action plan for improvement based on parent feedback
Human Resources
- Responsible for the hiring, training, leading and evaluating of a strong staff team.
- Work with HR to ensure all hiring paperwork is completed for staff before arriving at camp.
- Ensure all staff have a completed review by end of summer that is on their file in Bamboo.
- Responsible for organizing and scheduling Resource and Staff training, and ensuring all staff have up to date certifications and training before summer program begins.
- Ensure all rental/program staff are scheduled in advance and proper paperwork is completed for HR, Finance and timesheets.
Program Development
- Responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the site-wide policies and emergency procedures.
- Develop, plan and grow off season programming at Camp Glenburn to include school trips, corporate team building, certification programs, leadership programs etc.
- Responsible for booking and facilitating rentals, field trips, training sessions etc.
- Work with Marketing Department to create advertising and promotional materials for off season programming.
- Work with community partners to develop and grow Outdoor Education opportunities for both Camp Glenburn and the Glenn Carpenter Centre.
- Work collaboratively with HMR department for program development and new initiatives.
Skills And Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in recreation, education or other related field.
- Senior leadership experience in an over night camp setting.
- Strong out tripping background and experience in with a variety of recreation activities.
- Excellent accounting and budgeting skills is preferred.
- Ability to facilitate education and team building programs for youth and adults.
- Ability to effectively support and supervise a seasonal staff of 50.
- Strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent team player and able to work with senior leadership team.
- Strong communication, customer service and public relation skills.
- Computer literate and able to function within Microsoft Office.
- First Aid/CPR.
- CUI Level I or equivalent.
- Must possess Class 5 driver’s license.
- This position will require that the candidate live on site from May to September.
- Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search and Social Development Check.
