About the job:
Position Summary
The Housing Assistant provides basic clerical and support services to the Housing Department of Seabird Island Band. This position helps with routine tasks such as filing, answering inquiries, and organizing housing information. By maintaining efficient office operations and supporting the Housing Department staff, the Housing Assistant contributes to the delivery of responsive and effective housing services to the community.
This is a Full Time Term contract until March 31st, 2025.

What you’ll do
- Help organize and file housing documents both digitally and in physical files.
- Answer basic tenant questions and refer them to appropriate staff for more detailed assistance.
- Assist with simple data entry tasks, such as updating contact information.
- Maintain supplies for the office, ensuring forms, brochures, and other materials are stocked.
- Assist with greeting tenants or visitors and directing them to the right person or service.
- Perform basic office tasks such as answering phones, managing emails, and photocopying.
- Support the scheduling of meetings, and other housing-related events.
- Keep an accurate record of your development and progress.
- Able to accept delegation and follow tasks.
- Participating in meetings as required.
Other Duties
- Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
- Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Manager, Director, Chief Administrative Officer, or Chief & Council.
What you bring
Qualifications
- Eligible participants are First Nations youth ordinarily resident on reserve, in recognized communities or on community lands.
- Eligible participants must be legally entitled to work in Canada and must be between the ages of 15 to 30 at the start of the program’s activities.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities an asset.
- Good communication and relationship-building skills.
Cultural Competency:
- Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
Preferred
- Understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, and community.
- Ability to respond professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
- Good writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
Working / Special Conditions
- Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
- Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq’éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.

Employment is conditional upon completing pre-employment screening to ensure a safe and secure work environment in which students, staff, members, families, community, as well as resources, and assets are protected. All background checks, reference checks and criminal record checks are performed in accordance with Seabird Island Human Resources Policy Manual, protecting the integrity and confidentiality of information gathered during the evaluation.
