About this role:

Burlington Hydro Inc. (“BHI”) is seeking a Metering Technician Apprentice. Reporting to the Manager, Metering & Technical Services, this position is responsible for performing a variety of routine skilled and technical work in the maintenance, repair and installation of electrical meters and associated equipment. The successful candidate must enroll and work towards completing the MEARIE Meter Technician certification program by satisfying the hours and training requirements for certification.  The incumbent will be assigned to work with various Journeypersons throughout the apprenticeship period and, with training, will be expected to work on and operate meter and metering equipment. This is a full-time unionized position.

Core responsibilities:

  • Assist with new installation, testing, repairing, removing and/or troubleshooting metering equipment and electronic metering
  • Determine faults in meters, instrument transformers, metering equipment and electronic metering
  • Assist with the setup and support of interval data collection systems (currently MV90) and the Installation, operation and troubleshooting of Smart Metering Systems
  • Assist government inspectors in verifying meters and meter installations
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems on customer premises and correct problems or recommend corrective action to be taken
  • Must work safely within the EUSA Rules and Burlington Hydro Safety rules
  • All other duties as assigned

What we are looking for:

  • Electrical Engineering Technology Diploma program from a Community College or equivalent work experience
  • Possess and maintain a valid G Class Ontario Drivers’ License with a clean abstract

What you’ll need to be successful:

    • Registered with the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities as a Meter Technician Apprentice
    • Willingness and ability to complete all requirements of the MEARIE Meter Technician program
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills with excellent interpersonal and customer relations abilities
    • A strong work ethic with a positive approach to work and with coworkers
    • Willingness and ability to perform regular emergency call-out and on-call duties and work under emergency conditions as needed
    • Demonstrated working knowledge of pertinent industry regulations, rules, company policies and procedures, as well as industry best practices
    • Energetic, motivated, and committed to maintaining an excellent safety and attendance record
    • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification is an asset
