Position Summary:

The Wellness Specialist plays a vital role in the YCHC Wellness program by actively engaging children aged 2-12 years in afterschool and summer youth wellness activities. This position is responsible for creating a safe environment for children and assisting in the planning and implementation of structured youth, community & elder activities. The focus of these activities is to promote mental, physical, and spiritual health within the Family, Youth & Wellness Department.

 

This position requires compliance with Health Center’s compliance standards, including its Standards of Conduct, Compliance Program, and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element considered as part of the position’s regular performance evaluation. 

 

Essential Functions:

  • Engage directly with youth to strengthen interpersonal relationships and build trust.
  • Provide age-appropriate activities for children.
  • Assisting with activities and events for the community & elders.
  • Create opportunities for wellness activities that promote cultural values and beliefs.
  • Plan and implement youth & community activities that promote self-advocacy and leadership.
  • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Performs related duties.

  • Knowledge of program planning and development principles.
  • Knowledge of modern office principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Knowledge of project management principles.
  • Knowledge of research methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles.
  • Ability to deliver wellness activities on-time, in accordance with quality standards and within budget.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize the multiple demands of the job.
  • Skill in problem solving, organization and time management.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations and customer service.
  • Skill in establishing effective working relationships with internal agency staff and relevant community organizations.
  • Skill in the maintenance of files and records.
  • Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs, including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

 

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity.   The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibility or authority.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience performing similar duties; demonstrated capacity for working with youth, working with community partners and agencies, organizing information and accurately completing forms, surveys, and reports.
  • Familiarity/experience with wellness and prevention.
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination required unless a documented medical or religious exemption is approved. 
  • Possession or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alaska with a clean driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a National Criminal and State background check.
