POSITION SUMMARY
Seabird Island is committed to ensuring the protection and security of personal data for all members of the community. We are dedicated to creating a culturally safe and inclusive environment that respects and values First Nations knowledge, traditions, and ways of being. We are seeking a Data Protection Navigator to join our team, working collaboratively to support individuals affected by the FNHA data breach.
Under the direction of the Health Executive Assistant the Data Protection Navigator provides culturally informed guidance and support to individuals whose personal information has been compromised due to the FNHA data breach. This role involves working directly with affected clients to help them understand the breach, mitigate risks, and take the necessary actions to protect their personal information. The Data Protection Navigator will also engage in community outreach and support activities, ensuring that all affected individuals receive the assistance they need during this difficult time.
This is a Part Time 6-month term contract with the possibility of extension.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Serving as the primary point of contact for clients affected by the FNHA data breach, offering empathetic, professional support to address their concerns and questions.
- Educating clients on the nature of the data breach, potential risks, and recommended steps to safeguard their personal information.
- Assisting clients in creating and implementing a personalized action plan to mitigate the effects of the data breach. This may include monitoring accounts, changing passwords, placing fraud alerts, and advising on secure data practices.
- Providing clients with resources such as credit monitoring services, identity theft protection programs, and referrals to relevant legal or financial assistance.
- Conducting regular follow-ups with clients to ensure progress with action plans and addressing any new or ongoing concerns.
- Engaging in community outreach and education initiatives to build awareness on privacy best practices and preventative measures for identity protection.
- Maintaining detailed and accurate records of client interactions, actions taken, and outcomes. Ensuring all documentation aligns with company policies and complies with relevant privacy and data
protection regulations. - Coordinating with internal departments and external agencies to facilitate additional support resources as needed.
- Participating in ongoing training sessions on data breach response strategies and tools, sharing insights with the team, and contributing to process improvement efforts.

WHAT YOU BRING
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent. A certificate or diploma in a relevant field, such as data privacy, information security, social services, or customer service, is an asset. Other forms of post-secondary education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, will be considered.
- Basic understanding of data privacy and security practices, with a willingness to learn more about data protection.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience working within First Nations communities, focusing on data or customer service.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Preferred:
- Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
- Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
- Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
- Good writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills for accurate record-keeping and documentation.
Cultural Competency:
- Deep understanding of First Nations cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
- Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
Working / Special Conditions
- Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
- Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq’éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
- Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s license and have access to safe and reliable transportation to effectively travel to clients’ homes to assist when needed.
