Directional Drill Operator (HDD Operator)

Overview:

This individual is responsible for all duties associated with and related to the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of directional drills as well as potholing, installing conduits, pulling cable, and installing handholes, pedestals, and ROW signs. This position will be expected to take a lead role for all drilling, conduit installation, cable pulling, and other installation and network repair work as required. Other duties would be to perform general site preparation, restoration, and right-of-way maintenance duties as well as perform preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment.

The Directional Drill Operator (HDD Operator) reports to the Fiber Optics Project Manager

Responsibilities:

• Operating directional bore equipment for underground utility construction
• Operating trenchers, plows, backhoes, excavators, and skid steer
• Operate tampers, jackhammers, drills, and saws when needed
• Conduit installation and pulling cable
• Install handholes, potholes, pedestals, and row signs
• Work in the field with the Fiber crews to complete work such as performing general site preparation, restoration, and right-of-way maintenance
• Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment

Qualifications:

Job Qualifications:

• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Class-A commercial driver’s license (CDL) preferred or ability to obtain is desirable
• 2+ years experience as a horizontal directional driller
• Ditch Witch experience preferred
• 2+ years of experience operating various earthmoving equipment
• Previous experience and knowledge of underground utility installations
• Ability to read and interpret OSP maps and designs and follow job specifications and orders
• Ability to work under minimal supervision, within broad guidelines of procedures and goals
• Verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism among co-workers and customers
• Must be dependable; trustworthy, and possess a positive and productive attitude
• Willing and able to work a flexible field and shop schedule that includes extended hours, travel, overnight and out-of-town stay, night shift, and after-hour calls for service and repair
• Willing to undergo a thorough background and drug screening process is required

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:

• Sit for long periods of time (up to an entire workday) while operating equipment, including the constant use of hand and foot controls
• Lift, place materials, stand, walk, turn, stoop, kneel, crawl, reach, crouch, speak and hear continuously
• Lift up to 100lbs
• Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions
• Wear safety equipment: as per OSHA/MSHA requirements including but not limited to steel-toed and/or metatarsal shoes, hard hats, lanyards, fire retardants, protective eyewear, etc.
• Be safety and customer-focused, without exception:
