About the job:
Women in Power Engineering Bursary Program, Atura Power
Application Period Closes December 6, 2024
This annual program supports female students enrolled in Power Engineering studies in the province of Ontario.
This program is open to any student that identifies as female and is enrolled in the 2024/2025 academic year in a TSSA approved Power Engineering certification program (2nd, 3rd or 4th Class).
Recipients of this bursary will receive $5000.00 CAN and be offered a 4-month paid work placement at one of Atura Power’s fleet of power generating facilities.
Within this placement you will have the opportunity to acquire steam time and will be able to work hands-on in a first-class power plant under the guidance of our knowledgeable team.
Funds will be awarded to the student at the end of the paid work placement.
Paid Summer Term Placement: May 5 – Aug 29, 2025
Facilities for placement to choose from include:
- Portlands Energy Centre: 470 Unwin Ave, Toronto ON
- Brighton Beach Power: 100 Broadway Street, Windsor ON
- Napanee Generating Station: 7143 Loyalist Parkway, Bath ON
- Halton Hill Generating Station: 7870 Sixth Line South, Halton Hills ON
Job Description for student placement is as follows:
Introduction

Job Summary
Reporting to the Operation Manager, the successful student will work alongside the Operations and Maintenance teams who are ultimately responsible for achieving maximum efficiency, reliability, and safety of the plant operations. This is a unionized position.
To qualify for this position, you must be scheduled to return to school at the end of the work term.
Responsibilities and tasks you may experience during your placement
- Participating in operating and maintaining gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, a triple pressure steam turbine, and associated ancillary equipment
- Participating in water treatment plant activities, water testing, analysis
- Communicating effectively through our computerized maintenance management system and be familiar with PLC/DCS/HMI interfaces
- Performing various safety functions including lockout, hazard assessment/job safety analysis
- Participating in routine preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment
- Witness start-up, shutdown, and operation of the plant consistent with Atura Power operating procedures in accordance with O. Reg. 219/01.
Requirements
- 2nd, 3rd or 4th class Ontario Operating Engineering
- Enrolled in school the following term
- Team player attitude
- Driver’s license and access to personal vehicle – Atura plants are not accessible by transit
Physical Demands
- Lifting / moving up to 50lbs
- Stairs (there are no elevators located at PEC and all access is by ladders, stairs and scaffolds)
- Climbing ladders and working at heights and/or in confined spaces
