Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is one of Canada’s three main institutes for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, our world-renowned researchers drive fundamental and applied research at the University of Alberta (and other academic institutions), training some of the world’s top scientific talent. About the Role
The Lead Machine Learning (ML) Scientist drives scientific excellence through the advancement of AI literacy in industry, post-secondary institutions and the K-12 education system. The Lead ML Scientist uses their scientific knowledge, applied research experience, and commitment to sound pedagogical practices to empower a team of ML Educators to create and deliver content that individuals and organizations need to continue their AI literacy journeys.
In addition to guiding our team of ML Educators, the Lead ML Scientist will support the maintenance of all our content by keeping up to date with the latest AI advancements and adult learning best practices.
Reporting to the Product Owner, Training, the Lead ML Scientist serves as key leader of the Training Team and an active participant in executing Amii’s business functions. The Lead ML Scientist provides leadership through individual subject matter expertise, applied research experience, pedagogical best practice, and people leadership.

Required Skills / Expertise
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides expert scientific guidance and insights to shape the strategic direction of AI literacy competencies and learning assets
- Leads and delivers dynamic workshops and speaking engagements to advance AI literacy opportunities within the community
- Acts as a trusted advisor and facilitator, helping teams and clients identify how AI and ML tools can effectively address their business needs
- Leads regular meetings with partners, preparing presentations and reports to ensure we are aligned with meeting their learning goals
- Presents complex scientific concepts and findings in a clear and accessible manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership
- Communicates effectively with senior leadership at partner organizations, adapting to organizations of various sizes
- Oversees, reviews and approves AI literacy competencies benchmarks and technical learning assets
- Supports the Product Owner in the development and delivery process of our products based on market needs
- Leads the development, oversight, and implementation of science-related components within program and product roadmaps
- Provides supervision to junior team members by overseeing and refining their work, and managing approval processes
- Mentors direct reports on career development and progression, drawing lessons for coaching opportunities
- Encourages a collaborative work environment by facilitating teamwork and the exchange of ideas among team members
- Identifies and addresses knowledge gaps, providing solutions or resources to bridge them
- Encourages and maintains a problem-solving approach to work while acting as a coach and collaborator
Required Qualifications:
- Masters or Ph.D. in Machine Learning
- 5+ years applied AI experience
- Post Secondary Degree in Education or related field (nice to have)
- Experience with developing and delivering curriculum; designing effective learning exercises, illustrations of technical concepts, training and evaluation tools
- Must be comfortable speaking in public, being on camera, teaching groups of various sizes, and facilitating group activities
- Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and meet project deadlines
- Ability to communicate highly technical subject matter to a variety of audiences
- Proficient in eLearning systems
- Interest in and ability to test new educational tools and technologies
